Digital Desk, Varanasi Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain, Director, IIT Gandhinagar, has been appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind as the new Vice Chancellor of Benaras Hindu University (BHU). The BHU Registrar’s Office has appointed Professor Jain as Vice Chancellor for a term of three years. BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said that the professor would take over as the 28th Vice Chancellor of Jain University. After the tenure of Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar ended on March 28 this year, Prof. V.K. Shukla Caretaker was in charge of the affairs as the Vice Chancellor.
He said that the date of joining Professor Jain would be announced soon. Professor Jain did his BA from Roorkee University in 1979 and then completed his MS and PhD in 1980 and 1983 from the California Institute of Technology Pasadena. He conceived and developed the National Informatics Center for Earthquake Engineering at IIT Kanpur with the objective of disseminating information and literature against earthquake disasters and building capacity.
Professor Jain conceived, developed and managed a national program on seismic engineering education with the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development with the objective of developing seismic engineering in colleges of engineering, architecture and polytechnics in the country. Professor Jain is known for his idea and development of an Internet-based platform for exchanging ideas and discussing issues related to structural engineering.
